But on the other hand, the agency says the economy generated 49,000 full-time positions last month.
Greater Victoria's labour force swelled to more than 200,000 in January, though that surge in numbers coincided with the region's unemployment rate rising slightly to 3.9 per cent, the second lowest in the country.
Ontario had the biggest jobs decline among the provinces, shedding 50,900 positions on a drop in part-time work.
While that is lower than the national number, the dollar amount of $27.83 in Ontario is higher than for all of Canada at $27.46 for January, said Gordon Song, an analyst with Statistics Canada, in an email.
Nationally, the employment rate rose from 5.8 per cent in December to 5.9 per cent in January.

The wage improvements in January arrived the same month that saw Ontario take the controversial step of raising its minimum wage. The unemployment rate remains at 5.5 percent.
