European Union Expects Maldives Government To Engage In Talks With Opposition Leaders

07 February 2018

President Yameen late Monday declared a state of emergency after his last ditch attempt to convince the top court to revoke the order failed after the apex court rejected the government's "legal and judicial" concerns over the order.

The United States said earlier it was "troubled and disappointed" at the declaration of a state of emergency and called on Yameen to comply with the rule of law.

The president of the Maldives says the country's state of emergency was imposed to investigate "this plot, this coup" of a Supreme Court ruling last week ordering the release of imprisoned opposition leaders. "But when the chief justice were pushing for these things beyond his mandate or jurisdiction, we had to take it seriously".

Mr Nasheed was one of the opposition leaders the Supreme Court had ordered freed, ruling that the guilty verdicts had been politically influenced.

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was also arrested shortly after the state of emergency was declared on charges of plotting to overthrow the government.

The supreme court, said on Sunday there were no obstacles.

President Yameen has declared emergency state for 15 days and suspended as many as 20 constitutional rights for the duration along with the criminal procedure Act and several articles of the judicature Act. This declaration is unconstitutional and illegal.

He claimed he was ousted as president and made to resign at gunpoint by police and military officers in February 2012.

According to the SOP, the troops are kept ready to meet any eventuality, crisis or requirement for help, sources said, adding there is nothing unusual about such SOPs. He also asked the U.S. to ensure that all American financial institutions stop all transactions of the Yameen regime's leaders.

India and other nations have, meanwhile, issued an advisory warning to its citizens to defer all non-essential travel to the Maldives.

Back during his presidency, Nasheed had drawn world attention to the Maldives by conducting an underwater cabinet meeting, with the ministers wearing scuba diving suits, to highlight the dangers posed by global warming to low-lying island nations like his own.
