Kenya's opposition leader Raila Odinga sworn in as ''People's'' President

31 January 2018

Kenyan authorities on Tuesday shut down TV stations to prevent live coverage of a swearing-in event by opposition leader Raila Odinga, who boycotted last year's disputed presidential election.

Today, his political alliance, NASA (not to be confused with the American agency) made a decision to hold a gathering at Uhuru Park where they would swear in Raila Odinga as the 'People's President'.

Musyoka told The Associated Press by phone Wednesday the attack occurred hours after his police security was withdrawn and he had been blocked from attending a mock inauguration of opposition leader Raila Odinga on Tuesday in protest of President Uhuru Kenyatta's new term after months of deadly election turmoil.

Kenyatta was inaugurated in November, and Kenya Attorney-General Githu Muigai warned that an opposition group swearing in a president who's not officially been declared the victor is high treason - an offense that can result in death.

Kenyan Attorney General Githy Muigai previously warned that Mr Odinga would face treason charges if he proceeded with the ceremony.

Raila Odinga's controversial swearing in has apparently taken place at Uhuru Park.

Later, Ruaraka MP TJ Kajwang arrived at Uhuru Park dressed in a lawyer's robe and wig, eliciting excitement from the crowd.

The opposition chief further said what caused his co-principals to skip the event would be disclosed soon. "I knew we were vulnerable but I didn't think they would strike that fast", he said.

The government of Uhuru Kenyatta responded by declaring the opposition... The government is yet to make a comment on the matter.

Kenyatta had also been declared victor of the August election, but the Supreme Court later nullified that result, over irregularities. "Alos, by resisting all attempts at dialogue, Kenyatta has put himself in a position where he will continue to struggle to be seen as the president of all Kenyans".

Kenyatta won repeat polls with more than 98 percent of the votes cast.
