Grumpy Cat gets $710K in lawsuit

26 January 2018

Internet icon Grumpy Cat has won US$710,001 (NZ$962,000) in a lawsuit alleging a coffee company was improperly using its rights to her face, the Guardian reports.

The feline got the nickname for her grouchy face, but her real name is "Tardar Sauce".

Grenade Beverage paid to use her images on iced coffee products, but went further and launched a roasted coffee product without permission.

"Ironically, while the world-famous feline Grumpy Cat and her valuable brand are most often invoked in a tongue-and-cheek fashion, Defendants' despicable misconduct here has actually given Grumpy Cat and her owners something to be grumpy about", read the complaint.

The accused was arrested when his DNA matched with the sample found from the victim's body, Geo News reported, citing the sources. Two people were killed in Kasur the day after Zainab's body was recovered when police fired at hundreds of angry protesters.

Grumpy Cat may still be a sourpuss, but her owner has something to smile about after winning more than $700,000 in an intellectual property lawsuit.

The deal between the two was for the Grummpuccino iced drink, which has the Grumpy Cat name and image on the bottle.

Additionally, Grumpy Cat Limited said the percent of profits it was receiving from Grumppucino sales wasn't what Grenade had agreed to in the contract. Through the sale of t-shirts, books, pillow, and other Grumpy Cat branded items, Bundesen has reportedly raked in millions.

It also has an iced coffee, Grumpy Cat Grumppuccino, which led to a breach of contract suit against manufacturer Grumpy Beverages.
