Nvidia's New AI Platform Brings Smart Assistants and AR to the vehicle

With Volkswagen, Nvidia said it was infusing its artificial intelligence technology into the German automakers' future lineup, using Nvidia's new Drive IX platform. The software also blends in with NVIDIA's self-driving vehicle solutions, meaning that Drive AR can highlight points of interest whilst your not driving.

NVIDIA DRIVE Xavier, available this quarter, is the autonomous machine processor at the heart of this functionally safe system.

"Artificial intelligence is revolutionising the auto", said Herbert Diess, Volkswagen CEO.

During the opening of the CES tech conference in Las Vegas, Nevada Nvidia boss Jensen Huang explained that Uber is using his company's AI technology in its fleet of developmental self-driving cars.

As one of the world's top automotive suppliers, Germany-based ZF brings expertise for system integration of the vehicle computer and the sensors. "Autonomous driving, zero tailpipe emission mobility and digital networking are virtually impossible without advances in AI and deep learning".

Nvidia is already working with a multitude of partners on Drive Xavier and Drive AV, including a partnership with Uber that will eventually lead to self-driving rideshare vehicles. "Working with NVIDIA, the leader in AI technology, enables us to take a big step into the future".

The Xavier processor has more than 9 billion transistors and is the most complex system on a chip ever created, Huang says, yet it requires a fraction of the electricity to run than far less powerful processors.

The first and arguably most notable involves Uber Technologies Inc., which in November ordered 24,000 sport utility vehicles that will form the backbone of a new autonomous shuttle fleet. Over the next few years, Nvidia's artificial intelligence technology will be included in cars made by the company. The company marks the Pegasus motherboard to be as the path to develop fully autonomous cars.
