HP recalls 50000 laptop batteries amid overheating concerns

According to the Consumer Product and Safety Commission (CPSC), HP has received eight reports of the batteries overheating, melting or charring, including three reports of property damage totaling $4,500 and one report of a first-degree burn to a person's hand. "For this reason, it is extremely important to check whether your battery is affected". The technology company is providing free battery replacements.

The machines affected represent 0.1% of HP's computers sold globally between December 2015 and December 2017.

HP is recommending users immediately download a BIOS update, which will place the the laptop in "Battery Safety Mode" so it can be used safely off the mains, bypassing the battery completely until it is replaced.

The batteries were also sold as accessories or provided as replacements through HP, or an authorized HP Service Provider.

But the prosecutor said that "flight attendants did not report that anyone asked them to change seats other than the victim". His wife told officials a similar story, and said that they had called the flight attendants to try to change seats.

Naturally, none of this will come at any cost to the customer, except for the inconvenience of temporarily having your battery disabled.

If this story has provoked a certain degree of déjà vu in your mind, that's probably not surprising, given that at the start of previous year, HP issued a battery recall due to fire risk concerns. When enabled on an affected system, the battery will be discharged and then can't be charged (at least without disabling the safety mode).
