Grassley, Graham call for investigation into "Trump dossier" author

06 January 2018

The referral was made by Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Chuck Grassley and Senator Lindsey Graham, who asked the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate whether Steele lied to federal authorities about his contacts with reporters. Lindsey Graham of SC, whose subcommittee has held several Russia-related hearings, said in a statement they were referring ex-British agent Chris Steele for what they described as "potentially false statements about the distribution of claims from the dossier".

Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, said she and her Democratic colleagues were not consulted on the referral. They also insisted that they were not accusing Steele of committing a crime, but merely referring the matter for further investigation.

"This action was taken without any bipartisan cooperation, or even consultation", Blumenthal said in a statement.

CBP has not given an explanation of what caused the disruption in the system but did say it was not "malicious in nature". It added that all airports came back online after the outage lasted from 7:30 pm to about 9:30 pm ET.

Republicans counter that the dossier may have influenced federal authorities when they made a decision to open a counterintelligence investigation into associates of Mr. Trump before the election, and say that the Obama-era Justice Department may have been prejudiced against their then-nominee. "Maybe there is some innocent explanation for the inconsistencies we have seen, but it seems unlikely", he added.

Dated Jan. 4, the letter indicates the senators passed attached a classified memo "related to certain communications between Christopher Steele and multiple US news outlets regarding the so-called "Trump dossier" that Mr. Steele compiled on behalf of Fusion GPS for the Clinton Campaign and the Democratic National Committee and also provided to the Federal Bureau of Investigation".

The two men said the dossier was not the trigger for the FBI's investigation into Russian meddling, but that intelligence committees "have known for months that credible allegations of collusion between the Trump camp and Russia were pouring in from independent sources". The probes are looking into allegations that Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 US election to help Republican Trump. United States officials have corroborated some aspects of the dossier, although its most salacious allegations have not been corroborated by the intelligence community or CNN.
