Apple finally admits it deliberately slows down old iPhones

22 December 2017

Modern technology changes so rapidly that the fancy phones that debut on a yearly basis become obsolete pretty much just as quickly, with companies like Apple touting new hardware that is sometimes multiple times more powerful than even recent iterations.

By contrast, Apple's iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 plus have been available from Rogers and the other major Canadian carriers since September and they've been selling the iPhone X more than a month longer than Freedom, which has had to upgrade its network this year to carry the Apple products.

Bogdanovich claims Apple's decision to slow the operation of older phones to save battery life was never requested or agreed upon. and it lowers the value of their phones. Apple is wrong, however, not to make it easy and low-priced to replace old batteries.

Jeep Cherokee going to Detroit with new face
Now Jeep has unveiled the refreshed 2019 Cherokee ahead of its debut next month at the Detroit Auto Show . New taillights still mounted high on the tailgate round out the changes outside.

Beginning with a software update it pushed out past year, however, Apple tried a new tactic: slowing down devices during moments of high demand so their beleaguered batteries could keep up.

When an iPhone's processor makes a big current draw from a flagging battery, the battery can deliver the current in spikes that can potentially damage the phone's electronics.

Apple said it wanted to "prolong the life" of customers' devices. The shutdown protection's now been extended to the iPhone 7 range too.

In a Twitter thread, developer Guilherme Rambo said that he tested the effect of Apple's iOS 10.2.1 and 11.2.0 updates on the battery life of the iPhone 6S and 7 and found an interesting secret.

As for owners of older iphone's such as the iphone 6 then the way to avoid the dreaded slowdown is NOT to update your IOS software.

Apple's admission contradicts earlier information released by benchmarking company Futuremark. The lithium-ion batteries are less able to respond to peaks in demand in case of cold weather, low battery charge, or aging with time, which may lead to an unexpected closure of the unit to protect electronic components. Apple's fix appears to be throttling the CPU to prevent the phone from randomly shutting down. Obviously, there are variations and some batteries last longer than others, but without access to data, it's hard to say whether iPhone batteries are specifically vulnerable to aging at an abnormally fast rate. Apple charges $79 to replace the battery of an iPhone that's no longer covered by a warranty.
