Sen. McCain returning to Arizona, will miss tax bill vote

20 December 2017

CBS News reported that McCain, who was hospitalized for side effects of chemotherapy treatment for brain cancer, returned to Arizona on Sunday and would miss the tax overhaul vote.

"Senator McCain has responded well to treatment he received at Walter Reed Medical Center for a viral infection and continues to improve". The senator's office released a statement with the doctor's assessment. The statement says the senator appreciates the outpouring of support from people around the country.

His daughter, Meghan McCain, took to Twitter on Sunday saying that she is excited to spend Christmas with her dad in Arizona. Republicans have won over two key votes for the measure, meaning they should have the razor-thin majority needed to pass the bill, even without McCain. His presence means the GOP can lose one member of its caucus and still pass the bill. "An evaluation of his underlying cancer shows he is responding positively to ongoing treatment".

President Trump told reporters at the White House Sunday afternoon that he spoke to McCain's wife, Cindy. He added: "But the word is John will come back if we need his vote".

McCain's closest friend in the Senate, Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said he hadn't spoken to McCain but planned to do so over the holidays. He was diagnosed with the tumor following surgery to remove a blood clot in July. It's too bad. He's going through a very tough time, there's no question about it. The bill appeared to have unanimous support from the Republican Senate conference, with all 52 senators signaling they would vote yes. He voted for the initial version of the tax plan, which includes sweeping tax cuts and initially passed the Senate with 51 votes.

Meghan McCain's new husband, The Federalist's Ben Domenech gave an update on the senator's condition after the longtime Arizona senator was hospitalized earlier this week.
