Google removes YouTube access from Amazon's FireTV

07 December 2017

Amazon responded by saying Google was "setting a disappointing precedent by selectively blocking customer access to an open website", adding: "We hope to resolve this with Google as soon as possible". YouTube has more than one billion users worldwide, close to one third of total internet users, and the inability to watch it on Amazon devices is a major inconvenience. In 2016, YouTube's viewership on TV screens grew 90% compared to 2015, according to the Google-owned company.

Google support for YouTube on the Echo Show ended 05 December, and YouTube will no longer be available to Fire TV users from 01 January.

Google claims that the way the Echo Show uses YouTube was in violation of its rules, and that it was unfair that Google was being forced to support Amazon when the online marketplace had stopped stocking its products.

In a statement, a YouTube spokesperson said: "We've been trying to reach agreement with Amazon to give customers access to each other's products and services".

The dispute stems from YouTube's recent rollout of the Amazon products, which Google said lacked several features users came to expect. Here's hoping Amazon does something similar with Google. This shows that Google wants to impose its own rules on how YouTube is rendered on Amazon's devices, but that doesn't seem to imply that Google is seeking control. Mark Eamer, vice president of Prime Video, said in a statement today that Amazon is "thrilled" to finally have the app on Apple TV. For Amazon Echo Show owners, well, as you can see from the image above, your access has already been cut.

Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) isn't going to take its products' exclusion from Amazon's marketplace lying down.

At the launch of the original Echo in the United Kingdom, we were told that when it came to Google, the 'door is always open';, but it seems that both parties are refusing to compromise.

"Given this lack of reciprocity".
