Russia Has Been Banned From Competing In The 2018 Winter Olympics

06 December 2017

The IOC also confirmed that these "neutral athletes" will not get to wear any Russian uniform - or hear their country's national anthem - if they win a gold medal. Yet, if individual athletes from the country wish to compete, they must undergo testing requirements to ensure "a level playing field".

Nations have in the past been barred from taking part in the Olympics, notably South Africa during the apartheid years, but none has ever been handed a ban over doping.

Russian Federation has repeatedly refused to accept that a state-sponsored doping program existed. The scheme was rivaled perhaps only by the notorious program conducted by East Germany throughout the 1960s, '70s and '80s. Some Russian officials have threatened to boycott if the International Olympic Committee delivered such a severe punishment. This report also addresses in particular the manipulation at the anti-doping laboratory at the Olympic Winter Games Sochi 2014 which targeted the Olympic Games directly.

Following the ruling, Russia's former Minister of Sport, Vitaly Mutko, and his then deputy minister, Yuri Nagornykh, have been banned from participating in all future Olympic Games despite their strong denial of the doping allegations.

Ali spoils Cotto's farewell battle with resolution win
But Ali really came on strong in the second half of the fight, after Cotto said he hurt his left biceps in the seventh round. Cotto, who won six titles in four different weight classes in his career, didn't make excuses for the outcome.

"An Olympic boycott has never achieved anything", IOC President Thomas Bach said at a news conference.

The International Olympic Committee said the country's government officials are forbidden to attend the Games, its flag will not be displayed during the opening ceremony, and its anthem will not be played. The two also made a statement applauding the IOC's decision.

The executive board reached its decision Tuesday after a scheduled 4 1/2-hour debate when it heard from a Russian delegation that included world figure skating champion Evgenia Medvedeva.

"The Russian athletes have been tested more than other by a considerable margin", Budgett said.

Meanwhile the credibility of the Russian whistleblower Grigory Rodchenkov, who ran the Moscow anti-doping laboratory before fleeing previous year and revealing what he knew to McLaren, was recently enhanced by the Oswald commission, who confirmed that he was a "truthful witness". The film chronicles Fogel's investigation into the global world of sports doping.

The national plan, divised by the Independent Public Anti-Doping Commission, is aimed at tackling doping in the country.

Tuesday's decision may have major consequences for another major sports event, next year's $11 billion soccer World Cup in Russian Federation.

Mutko, who was sports minister at the time of the 2014 Sochi Olympics, remains head of the 2018 World Cup organizing committee.
