While there is no formal definition of a supermoon, it's typically considered a full moon that occurs at perigee. That's because December's full moon is 2017's only supermoon. Supermoons occur when the moon is as close as it can be to the Earth while it's also a full moon-which happens at the time of the month when the sun and the moon line up with Earth in between them. The next time the moon will come that close to the Earth will be on November 25, 2034.
In December, the moon will be closest to the Earth on December 4 at 2.15 pm (IST), when it will be 3,57, 492 km away from Earth. It is anticipated that it will be within 222,443 miles from our planet at 4 pm on December 4.
The moon will appear to be about 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter.
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) officials had said that supermoon was seen 70 years ago however, the force of attraction was the strongest resulting in high tides than usual.
It's worth noting that a supermoon technically occurs during a new moon, too, but that phenomenon usually isn't referred to as a supermoon since new moons are not visible in the night sky.
While the moon is undoubtedly both bigger and brighter than usual, our eyes tend to trick us into seeing the moon as larger than it truly is.

Astrologer Richard Nolle defined a supermoon in 1979, but the term has really taken off in the past few years.
Those who miss out to view the supermoon in person can catch up with the sighting as the astronomical spectacle will be live streamed by robotic telescope service (Slooh).
"We're seeing all of the Earth's sunrises and sunsets at that moment reflected from the surface of the Moon", says Sarah Noble, a Program Scientist at NASA headquarters. "But it's another great chance to watch the Moon".
British people place Longford above the border with Northern Ireland
They said this was what Theresa May meant when she talked about Britain and the European Union "moving forward together". Neither side wants a "hard border" but there has been no agreement so far on how this could be achieved.
"If you stretch out your arm at full length, and stretch out your thumb, and compare the size of the full moon in the sky to the size of your thumb, you'll notice the width of the full moon compared to the size of your thumb; you can put four full moons across the width of your thumb". "Some people perceive the rising moon as twice as large...", said Paranjpye.
