Mueller probes Flynn's role in alleged plan to deliver cleric to Turkey

Lawyers for Mr Flynn labelled the allegations "outrageous" and "false".

President Trump's former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn is accused of plotting to forcibly remove a Muslim cleric living in the USA and delivering him to Turkey in exchange for millions of dollars.

According to the sources, Mr Mueller recently interviewed witnesses over last December's meeting between the Turkish officials and Mr Flynn at the swanky 21 Club in New York City.

The alleged plan emerged during Mueller's wider investigation of possible Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and any collusion by the Trump campaign.

Verification was meant to authenticate identity & voice but it is interpreted as an endorsement or an indicator of importance. Twitter announced Thursday that it will cease issuing the coveted blue check marks that indicate a user has been " verified ".

Citing "people with knowledge of discussions" between Flynn and Turkish representatives, The Journal reported that Flynn and his son were to be paid as much as $15 million by the Turkish government.

Flynn was sacked after just 24 days as Trump's national security adviser over misleading Vice President Mike Pence about his conversations with Russia's ambassador to the U.S., Sergey Kislyak.

In September, the Wall Street Journal reported a meeting about the plan, in which former Central Intelligence Agency director James Woolsey participated. According to "people familiar with the investigation", it was at this encounter that the $15m payment was discussed. The discussions allegedly involved the possibility of transporting Mr. Gulen on a private jet to the Turkish prison island of Imrali, according to one of the people who has spoken to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. There's no indication that money changed hands or that an agreement was made.

While he may have been a voice during the 2016 campaign, the revelation that Flynn gave incomplete information as national security adviser cost him his position in the White House. The White House has distanced itself from the men charged by Mueller - Papadopoulos, former campaign manager Paul Manafort and his business associate Rick Gates.

As a rule, they said, they do not comment on news reports involving their client. "Evidence that Flynn was prepared to act in such an unlawful way could help prove a case against him in other activities as well involving his ties to Russian Federation during the campaign".

Special counsel Mueller's ability to gather enough evidence to make the charges stick could lead to Flynn making a plea bargain in exchange for cooperation on the Russia-related investigations.

Most of what has been reported about Mueller's questioning of Flynn's lobbying work has concerned his efforts on behalf of Turkey.

Former National Security Adviser Mike Flynn and the Turkish government are both refuting a report that they were considering a plan to forcibly send a Muslim cleric Turkey has said was behind a failed military coup from the United States to Turkey.
