Consumer Group Calls for Target Toy Recall

Traces of lead may end up inside a child's body when fingers are transferred from a fidget spinner to a child's mouth or food.

But after testing several models, US Public Interest Research Group Education Fund (PIRG) is accusing Target of selling two models that contain "extremely high levels of lead". Company representatives argue that a fidget spinner is not a toy because such products are not intended for kids 14 and older.

CoPIRGreport that when Target and the toy's distributor, Bulls i Toy, were alerted to the findings, they refused to address the problem.

As of Thursday, the Target website mistakenly had the age recommendation as "6 years and up" in the product details under the Fidget Wild Spinner Premium Brass.

The hardware store test, administered by Cleveland 19, showed the fidget spinner contained lead. The Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Metal, meanwhile, contained 1,300 ppm of lead in the center circle, and 520 ppm in its arm.

Bulls-I-Toys, the manufacturer of the fidget spinners in question, said in a letter to US PIRG that "there are no mandatory CPSC requirements for it" because the packaging makes it clear that the item should not be used by children of a certain age.

"The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has reviewed and explicitly defined fidget spinners as 'general use products.' They are not defined by the CPSC as toys", said Target spokesman Lee Henderson in a prepared statement. "The buck has to stop with someone".

Exposure to high levels of lead can cause developmental problems in children, organ damage and other long-term health issues. "All of our product are tested and comply with [Consumer Product Safety Commission] safety standards".

The "Lead Safe Mama" blog and the U.S. Public Interest Research Group are now calling for those products to be taken off store shelves. Now is the time for it to stand up for consumers.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that any amount of lead in a child's blood is unsafe, and that contamination is irreversible.
