37.8 million Kidde fire extinguishers recalled; one death reported

"You're better off to have no fire extinguisher than a defective fire extinguisher", said former California chief fire marshal James McMullen.

More than 40 million fire extinguishers - some on the market for more than four decades - are being recalled in the U.S. and Canada because they may not work in an emergency.

The problem is the plastic handle on 134 Kidde models. Canada is also recalling nearly 3 million additional extinguishers.

Note: This recall includes fire extinguisher models that were previously recalled in March 2009 and February 2015.

Check your pantry, under the sink, in the garage, or anywhere you have stored a fire extinguisher after one company has recalled more than 37 million devices. Their nozzles also may detach with enough force "to pose an impact hazard", the CPSC said.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled various makes and models of Kidde fire extinguishers with plastic handles.

The CPSC says there have been approximately 391 reports of failed or limited activation or nozzle detachment that resulted in approximately 16 injures, 91 reports of property damage, and 1 fatality. They were sold in red, white, and silver and are either ABC or BC rated.

This recall covers 134 models produced from January 1, 1973, through August 15, 2017. They were also sold for use in commercial trucks, recreational vehicles and boats.

The CPSC website has a list of the models that are affected.
