Spectrum Health Blodgett, Butterworth, Ludington, United, and Zeeland Community all received A's.
But the largest number of hospitals earned a "C" grade or lower.
No Maryland hospitals in the D.C. area got F grades, and one got an A.

According to the EAM and Leapfrog, Michigan is showing a trend in declining A grades and increasing B grades. The five states with the lowest percentage of A-grade hospitals are Washington, D.C., North Dakota, Delaware, Maryland and NY.

Leapfrog awarded 662 "B" grades, 964 "C" grades, 159 "D" grades and 15 "F" grades. "All seven Rhode Island hospitals included in the report received an A. In 2012, the state ranked 50th for its hospitals" grades.
The Leapfrog Group, founded by a group of corporate employers, commissioned a panel of public health experts to develop the safety report card in the wake of a landmark 1999 report by the Institute of Medicine that revealed hospital errors kill about 98,000 patients a year.

Based on that data, Leapfrog measures 27 aspects of patient health and safety. Other states with significant improvement include OR, going from 48th in 2012 to eighth today, Hawaii from 36th to third, Wisconsin from 44th to sixth, and Idaho from 19th to fourth.
For example, Oregon, Hawaii, and Wisconsin all have active coalitions dedicated to patient safety within their local communities and hospitals. Maryland had previously been the only state unable to be graded due to an exemption from reporting key safety metrics at the national level.
Leapfrog surveys more than 2,600 hospitals across the USA, of which less than one-third received the "A" rating on the report.
