Regular marijuana use linked to having more sex

29 October 2017

Medical researchers in the United States have found frequent marijuana users have about 20 percent more sex than those who abstain. It's the first research to show a connection between marijuana use and the frequency of sex.

Pot users have about 20 per cent more sex than those who do not use it, reveals a study of more than 50,000 adult Americans. As Michael Eisenberg put it, "It doesn't say if you smoke more marijuana, you'll have more sex".

They compared the data about daily, weekly and monthly users with the records of those who never use and the results were pretty telling. When the majority of Americans have said they've smoked marijuana at least once, the more they can know about all aspects of how the drug affects their bodies, the better. Also, the higher the use of marijuana, the more the increase in sexual activity, suggesting a possible active role that pot may play in enhancing sexual desire.

Given that the average couple has sex about once a week, Dr Eisenberg said, the bottom line for partaking in a bong or blunt could add up to 20 more instances of sexual intercourse each year.

After excluding respondents who didn't answer one or more of the relevant questions, the researcher was left with data for 28,176 women, averaging 29.9 years of age, and 22,943 men, averaging 29.5 years of age.

"We were surprised to see the positive association between users", Eisenberg told CNN.

Some 24.5 per cent of men and 14.5 per cent of women in the analysis reported having used marijuana, and there was a positive association between the frequency of marijuana use and the frequency of sexual intercourse.

"There are arousal pathways that are stimulated by marijuana that could explain the results", he said, "but for this study, it's important to know that correlation does not mean causation".

There are reports of erectile dysfunction in men who regularly use cannabis, and previous studies have found reduced sperm counts in pot smokers. The survey, which provides data pertaining to family structures, sexual practices and childbearing, reflects the overall demographic features of the US population.

That said, research shows that the average couple has sex roughly once a week. It contains explicit questions about intercourse with a member of the opposite sex in the past four weeks, as well as the frequency of smoking marijuana in the previous 12 months.

He does, however, warn that the study shouldn't be misinterpreted as having a causal link.
