The character first appeared in Whiz Comics back in 1940 and was the most popular superhero of that decade, outselling even Superman.
Shazam (also known as Captain Marvel, although you can see why they'd avoid that name) is the superhero alter-ego of a boy called Billy Batson. It was only in 1970s that the DC banner took over the character. The hero has the powers of Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury.
Shazam is now in pre-production and is expected to start shooting in February. It has earned $303 million worldwide since it's opening in August. Levi has nabbed the role ahead of competition from the likes of John Cena, Zane Holtz, Billy Magnussen, and Jake McDorman.

Shares of Amazon .com ( NASDAQ: AMZN ) soared in Friday's trading session, boosted by a great third-quarter earnings report . In the fourth quarter of 2016, Amazon had $43.7 billion worth of sales, meaning that it expects an increase of 28% to 38%.
We also don't know if Levi will actually be playing a character named Captain Marvel. Shazam! is now set for a April 5, 2019 release with David F. Sandberg of Annabelle: Creation being rumored to direct. The movie is set to the most light-hearted DC film released to date. Warner Bros. also has plans for a Flash standalone film, a Batgirl film from Joss Whedon, and a sequel to last year's Suicide Squad.
Other upcoming DC Extended Universe movies include Justice League on November 17, 2017, Aquaman on December 21, 2018, Wonder Woman 2 on December 13, 2019, Cyborg in 2020 and Green Lantern Corps in 2020.
