The two actors, who were married for 50 years before Newman's 2008 death, starred together in the 1969 racing movie "Winning" that inspired Newman's real-life racing career.

Everyone knew it it was a watch that would break records. He gifted it to James Cox, the then boyfriend of Newman's daughter Nell.

This took place at Phillips" inaugural NY auction, "Winning Icons - Legendary Watches of the 20th Century' in association with auction house Bacs and Russo.

After the movie, he made a decision to take up the sport of motor racing himself, leading to his wife presenting the Rolex Daytona to him, with the words "DRIVE CAREFULLY ME" engraved on the back. "If you wind it, it tells pretty good time, '" Cox told the Wall Street Journal.

She wrote: "Pop asked James if he knew the time". Years later, when Cox (who is still friends with Nell) realized how valuable the watch could be, he chose to sell it and give what the Journal calls "a significant portion of the proceeds" to the charitable foundation Nell started after her father's death.
