Scores killed, injured in Alexandria train collision

One of the trains was traveling from Cairo, and the other from Port Said. He says he then came out of the train and found four train cars crushed and a lot of people on the ground.

In a previous statement the ministry said that 20 people were killed and another 88 injured in the incident.

It was not immediately clear what caused the crash.

Emergency teams rushed to the scene to evacuate the dead and the injured.

One train had been heading to Alexandria from Cairo and the other from Port Said, east along the coast.

The accident also wounded 132 people, with 79 being discharged after treatment while 53 remained in hospital on Saturday, Health Minister Ahmed Emad El-Din Rady said.

Egypt's prosecutor-general, Nabil Sadiq, has ordered an urgent investigation into the collision.

One of the trains partly keeled over after it was derailed from the track.

The families of those killed in Friday's train collision will receive at least EGP 50,000 ($US 2,812), announced Egypt's Social Solidarity Ministry. Figures recently released by the state's statistics agency show that 1,249 train accidents took place previous year, the highest number since 2009 when the number reached 1,577.

In 2013, a train derailment in Giza killed 19 people, while in 2012, a train collision with a school bus in the city of Manfalut killed 51 people, mostly children.

But that pales in comparison to the 370 or more who died when a massive fire swept through an overcrowded train going from Cairo to Luxor in 2002.
