Man kills himself after shooting officer in Brooklyn, authorities say

It all began Thursday afternoon when the officer from the 75th precinct was responding to a call about an emotionally disturbed man on Ridgewood Avenue in Cypress Hills. When they entered, the suspect opened fire, striking one cop in the right arm; two other shots hit his bulletproof vest.

The officer did not return fire and he was rushed to the hospital in stable condition.

According to the Associated Press, the gunman then barricaded himself in, prompting an hours-long standoff.

When police stormed the apartment, they found him dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"His vest definitely saved his life", tweeted New York Police Commissioner James O'Neill, who displayed the damaged protective equipment during a Thursday night news conference with city Mayor Bill de Blasio and police officials.

In addition to the weapons, the shooter had a good amount of pills and had recently gotten a new BMW, which has raised questions about how he funded the auto and what he was doing with the medication, police said.

O'Neill said the officer is 30 years old and has been on the force for just over two years.
