Hiring of Beane fortuitous after Gettleman firing

18 July 2017

The Carolina Panthers have fired general manager Dave Gettleman after four seasons, the team announced Monday. None has been bigger than this.

"After much thought and a long evaluation of our football operations, I have chose to relieve Dave Gettleman of his duties as general manager". Gettleman has been associated with 16 playoff teams in his National Football League career.

After learning of the news of Gettleman's firing, Smith tweeted "It's Okay!" Gettleman was a part of the organization since 2013, helping the Panthers find their way into the playoffs each of his first three seasons. The collective and informed theory is that Gettleman's gruff treatment of beloved vets - read Steve Smith, De'Angelo Williams and now perhaps Thomas Davis and Greg Olsen - eventually toxified his relationship with Richardson. But Carolina slipped to 6-10 a year ago after a tumultuous offseason that saw Gettleman rescind cornerback Josh Norman's franchise tag after negotiations turned sour.

Former Panther DeAngelo Williams had an even more pointed response, calling Gettleman a "snake" and saying the firing meant Williams might again play for the Panthers.

The Panthers report to Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on July 25 and have their first practice the following day.

Danny Morrison, who had served as the Panthers' president since 2009, also resigned in February.
