Former President Jimmy Carter hospitalized in Canada

14 July 2017

Former U.S. president Jimmy Carter was loaded into an ambulance and whisked off the Habitat for Humanity work site in Winnipeg Thursday morning.

Thanks to surgery, radiation and a relatively new form of immunotherapy treatment, Carter was declared cancer free in December 2015, and in March 2016, he announced he no longer needs cancer treatment, CNN said. "He has encouraged everyone to stay hydrated and keep building", a Habitat for Humanity spokesperson tells PEOPLE. He had been working on a building project with Habitat for Humanity, a charitable organisation promoting affordable home ownership.

The Carters have made Habitat for Humanity a centerpiece of their post-White House charitable endeavors.

Carter, 92, was hospitalized for dehydration, but said he was "okay."

Carter is not the oldest living American president, although he's close. According to the update, Carter is "okay and is being taken off site for observation".
