Google Doodle celebrates Oskar Fischinger's 117th birthday

And while Google's Doodle is wonderful, it's not almost as impressive as Fischinger's original work.

Not only was Fischinger behind the effects on several movies, including Fritz Lang's 1929 Woman in the Moon, he invented the Lumigraph, a device that generates chromatic displays with hand movements.

The Google Doodle with Fischinger's famous quote, "Music is not limited to the world of sound". On its home page today, June 22, Google has invited the visitors to interact and make their own visual music as an abstract animation.

Leon Hong, Google's creative lead on the Doodle, said of the project: "In the world of design, Fischinger is a towering figure, especially in the areas of motion graphics and animation". He was known for his ability to combine abstract visuals with musical instruments to give it character and a special nuance.

"Even with the advanced technology that now exists, emulating Fischinger's work is an impossible task". Each dot represents a note, and you can select between four different "instruments".
