GOP lawmaker Scalise still critical though doctors 'encouraged'

President Donald Trump visited Scalise at the hospital Wednesday night and later said in a speech, "He's a great fighter and he's going to be OK, we hope". He will need additional operations, possibly in the coming days. The team doesn't plan on removing them all soon: The Congressman has already undergone multiple surgeries in the last 36 hours.

The Louisiana Republican is recovering from "substantial damage" he suffered when a bullet pierced his left hip and traveled directly across to the other hip, Dr. Jack Sava of MedStar Washington Hospital Center said Friday.

Speaking in Miami on Friday, Trump said Scalise "took a bullet for all of us". The bullet that struck Scalise tore through his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs and causing severe bleeding, the hospital said.

Although Scalise was able to talk on the ballfield, by the time he was transported by helicopter to the hospital, he was in shock. "He clearly knows that they're there and appreciates their presence", Sava said.

Now, not even Jones wants his interview to air. "I knew in my gut this was going to blow up in their face", he said on his show. He called on the network to cancel the airing of the interview for "misrepresenting" his views.

Predicting when the congressman would be released from the hospital was hard, the doctor said, adding that "he will require a period of healing and of rehabilitation".
