US and Central American officials found common ground Thursday on the benefits of economic development and the need to reduce drug trafficking as the administration of President Donald Trump proposes to dial back financial assistance to the region.

The Washington Post reported Thursday evening that Pence has hired outside counsel to represent him during the Russian Federation probe.

Cullen served as a US attorney during President George H.W. Bush's administration.

Trump hired his own personal lawyer, Marc Kasowitz, a week ago, and he has been hard at work defending the president with factually inaccurate statements. "The vice president is focused entirely on his duties and promoting the president ('s) agenda and looks forward to a swift conclusion of this matter". The law firm referred questions back to the vice president's office. Michael Flynn, Trump's former national security adviser, misled Pence about his contacts with Russian officials - Pence then repeated the incorrect claims publicly.

As far as the public knows, Pence is not the subject of, or a person of interest in, any of the ongoing investigations surrounding the Trump campaign.

"A flourishing economy gives people a reason, a reason to put down roots in the land of their birth and to grow rather than fleeing to the north", Pence said.

Pence's choice for outside counsel contrasts with the president's. They declined to say what had sparked Pence's decision to hire an outside lawyer and referred all questions concerning the Russian Federation investigation to Cullen's office.

Vice President Al Gore also retained outside counsel in conjunction with an inquiry into his fundraising activities, including several telephone calls he made from his White House office soliciting Democratic campaign contributions.
