Ex-NBA player Rodman expected to arrive in North Korea Tuesday

But today the unlikely bromance between Dennis Rodman and Kim Jong-un appeared to have been rekindled, as the retired American basketball player made his latest visit to North Korea.

Rodman has said he is trying to "accomplish" something both he and President Trump need through this visit. "Multiple people involved in unofficial talks with North Korea say that the Trump administration has been making overtures toward the Kim regime, including trying to set up a secret back channel to the North Korean leader using "an associate of Trump's" rather than the usual line-up of North Korea experts and former officials who talk to Pyongyang's representatives".

Rodman, 56, arrived in Pyongyang later on Tuesday for a five-day visit, received by North Korean officials at Pyongyang's airport, China's Xinhua news agency reported from the North Korean capital. "We wish him well, but we have issued travel warnings to Americans and suggested they not travel to North Korea for their own safety", U.S. Undersecretary of State Thomas Shannon told reporters after discussing the North Korean missile threat and other issues with Japanese counterparts.

He was expected to arrive in North Korea later on Tuesday for a trip that the State Department said was not an official US visit, CNN reported on Monday. Rodman was also filmed singing "Happy Birthday" to Kim Jong-Un.

A North Korean foreign ministry official said Rodman would stay until Saturday.

His publicist also pointed out that Rodman was in the unusual position of being friends with both Mr Trump and Mr Kim.

The controversy surrounding Rodman's past trips to North Korea eventually became too hot to handle for Paddy Power, his previous sponsor. He spoke on condition of anonymity because the ministry had not issued a formal statement. North Korea called the system a provocation that it says is aimed at bolstering USA military hegemony in the region.

But Trump fired Rodman for spelling his wife Melania's name wrong.
